Hamburg’s story fits its setting at Iowa’s far southwest corner, tucked between the Nishnabotna and Missouri rivers and just a short drive from both the Missouri and Nebraska state lines. Early settlers in the 1840s believed they were actually in Missouri until surveys for Iowa statehood clarified the border; the nearby McKissick brothers established McKissick’s Grove as one of the first local settlements. In 1857, town founder Augustus Borchers formally platted Hamburg and named it after his native Hamburg, Germany. The city was incorporated a decade later, as rail lines connected it to Council Bluffs, St. Joseph, and Nebraska City, helping it grow into a regional farm and trade hub. Mid-20th-century Hamburg became nationally known for Vogel Popcorn and its Popcorn Days festival. More recently, dramatic Missouri River flooding in 2011 and 2019 tested the town’s levees and resilience, but Hamburg continues to rebuild and plan for the future with support from Fremont County and the State of Iowa’s agencies. You can learn more about the community on the Fremont County government site and on Wikipedia’s Hamburg, Iowa page.
